It was a lovely fall day in the heart of the Midwest; the leaves had just changed to a beautiful array of orange and yellow. I’d just finished speaking to an appreciative group regarding the epidemic of suicide in this country, including its risk factors. This was where I met Ronald’s parents, who told me his tragic story. Ronald, or Junior as they called him, was a good kid. He never really got in any trouble as a young child. As he grew older and entered middle and high school, he began to have difficulty dealing with symptoms of anxiety and depression.

1. #Healthheroes incorporate movement into their daily lives. It’s not necessary to join a fancy gym or an expensive class. Find your favorite activities and incorporate them into your life. Take a bike to work, garden, or take the stairs instead of the elevators.
2. Before participating in a new health regimen, the true #healthhero does research and asks his or her health-care provider. Often, injury and illness can result without the proper consultation.
3. A #healthhero knows why he or she is exercising. Knowing the reason for the activity will help motivation and dedication, ensuring success. Movement is for increased well-being, not just beautifully sculpted bodies.
4. The movement and exercise of the #healthhero can improve mental health. In fact, exercise can be as effective as some antidepressants in treating mild to moderate depression!
